How to Detect Termite Damage in Hardwood Floors

Hardwood floors add beauty and value to any home—but they’re not immune to termite attacks. Termites can quietly chew through wood from underneath, leaving costly and sometimes irreversible damage. Knowing how to spot the signs early can save you thousands in repairs.

1. Look for Unexplained Floor Sagging or Soft Spots

One of the earliest signs of termite activity is uneven or sagging floors. Termites eat away at the wooden subfloor and support beams, causing the floor above to weaken and sink.

2. Listen for Hollow Sounds

Tap on areas of your hardwood floor. If they sound hollow or papery, termites may have eaten the wood from the inside out, leaving only a thin outer layer.

3. Watch for Blistering or Bubbling Wood

Moisture from termite activity can cause hardwood floors to bubble, blister, or peel, often mistaken for water damage. If there’s no clear source of moisture, termites could be the culprit.

4. Check for Tiny Holes or Tunnels

Termites sometimes create small pinholes in the wood surface. These are often accompanied by fine, powdery frass (termite droppings) nearby.

5. Look for Mud Tubes Nearby

Subterranean termites often build mud tubes along walls, baseboards, or under flooring to travel between their nest and food source. These are a sure sign of active infestation.

Why Early Detection Matters

The longer termites go unnoticed, the more structural damage they cause—not just to your hardwood floors, but to the entire home. In severe cases, sections of flooring may need to be replaced entirely.
